Spinal Decompression

The spine is composed of a series of vertebrae (circular small bones) that are separated by spinal discs. A spinal disc functions like a cushion between each vertebra and is made up of a gel-like substance in the middle (nucleus pulposus) surrounded by a tough outer exterior (annulus fibrosus). When the spinal disc dehydrates, is injured, or begins to degenerate, the soft inner core of the disc can leak out, inflaming the surrounding nerves and causing painful symptoms. This is known as a herniated or bulging disc.

Spinal decompression therapy is a nonsurgical technique that utilizes motorized traction to gently stretch the spine, allowing the herniated or bulging disc to become realigned with its central spinal position. When the spine is slowly and deliberately stretched, this creates space that allows pressure to be relieved from the spinal discs. This holistic process facilitates healing of the nerves and improves the circulation of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the discs. If you are interested in learning more about decompression therapy, Dr. Stephen Jackson of Cumberland Chiropractic Center in Millville, has been a holistic chiropractic practitioner for over thirty years. He has vast experience helping patients gain relief from physical pain related to the musculoskeletal system, and uses state-of-the-art technology to perform decompression therapy on his patients.

In spinal decompression therapy, the patient will lie down either face up or face down on a motorized table controlled by a computer. Dr. Jackson will place a harness on the patient to ensure they are stable. During the therapy session at Dr. Jackson's office in Millville, he will use a precise computer program that is specifically programmed with that session’s treatment protocol. The computer will send movement messages to the motorized table that will help gently stretch and relax the spine, facilitating a separation between the vertebrae that allows the soft part of the bulging disc to come back to its natural placement.

Each spinal decompression treatment lasts approximately 20 minutes. Decompression therapy is usually recommended several times a week over a period of eight weeks, though each patient’s unique condition will determine their treatment plan. Many patients who undergo decompression therapy find they no longer need prescription pain medication to address their symptoms.

Spinal decompression therapy is considered a safe and effective treatment modality for patients with herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, sciatica, and pinched nerve. If you are experiencing any of these conditions and live near Millville, NJ, make an appointment today with Dr. Jackson at Cumberland Chiropractic Center. Spinal decompression therapy can relieve pain, restore mobility, improve flexibility, and help further degeneration of the nerves and discs in the spine. Please call (856) 825-0452.
